Description

The LPN to RN Mobility Program is designed to facilitate career mobility for LPNs seeking a credential as a registered nurse. Successful completion of the program leads to an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree and entry into multiple practice settings. Graduates are eligible to apply to sit for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) NCLEX-RN exam for licensure and practice as registered nurses (RNs).

 

Students are admitted to this program once a year at the Wallace Drive Campus into Track 1 or Track 2.

  • Track 1 – nurses who have been out of school and practicing for more than two years.
  • Track 2 – nurses who have graduated from an approved Alabama College System Practical Nursing standardized curriculum and have been practicing for less than two years.

 

Admission Requirements

In addition to the general admission requirements of the College, admission to the Paramedic to RN Mobility program requires:

  • Certificate of completion in an approved/accredited Practical Nurse program
  • Unconditional admission to Gadsden State Community College
  • A valid, unencumbered or non-restricted license as a Practical Nurse in Alabama
  • Minimum of 2.5 grade point average (GPA) calculated on the last 24 semester credit hours of completed coursework
  • Official transcripts in records office from all postsecondary institutions attended including LPN program
  • Official score on ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) version V
  • Completion of general education courses with a minimum grade of “C” 
  • Submission of application for the LPNN TO RN Mobility option by established deadline

Admission to the LPN to RN Mobility Program is competitive, and the number of students admitted is limited by the number of faculty and clinical facilities available. Applicants who meet minimum requirements are rank-ordered for acceptance using a state-approved point system. *  Students who successfully complete this course are awarded 16 non-traditional hours at the completion of the LPN mobility curriculum.

Students are given two attempts for all assessments.  Students must pass both knowledge assessments and all skill validations to be considered for eligibility into the RN program.  Satisfactory completion of knowledge and skill validations is on a pass/fail standard set by the Alabama College System.

  • Students should seek advisement each semester prior to registration to review their academic record, discuss issues related to admission or progression in nursing, and finalize their upcoming semester’s class schedule.
  • Prior to seeing the advisor, be sure you have:
  • Completed the admissions process
  • Requested high school/college transcripts to be sent to Gadsden State
  • Reviewed the class schedule for the upcoming semester and created a class schedule
  • Prepared questions you need to ask the advisor

Essential Functions

Essential Functions are the fundamental job duties/skills associated with a particular position. The American’s with Disabilities Act requires employers (as well as colleges/universities) to inform students of all performance expectations related to their job/school performance.  All students are required to read the essential functions identified for the registered nurse and determine if they are capable of performing those functions with/without reasonable accommodation.  Essential Function Policy

The nursing program and/or its affiliated clinical agencies may identify additional essential functions.  The nursing program reserves the right to ament the essential functions as deemed necessary.

 

Comprehensive Assessment

The LPN to RN program has integrated a comprehensive assessment plan to evaluate student learning throughout the curriculum. Standardized exams (HESI) are given each semester in selected courses as appropriate. Students are responsible for all costs associated with the plan. The acceptable benchmark for satisfactory performance is 850. Students who fail to meet the benchmark are required to remediate the content using a Faculty Guided (individualized) remediation plan. Students are responsible for contacting faculty to develop the remediation plan and projected completion dates. Once all elements of the plan have been completed, documentation must be submitted to Dr. Susan Tucker, Nursing Education Program Director, Room 210, Helderman Hall.. Standardized test scores may be used in the calculation of the course grade (maximum of 25%).

 

During the final semester of nursing, a comprehensive exam is given which covers all program content. Two attempts will be allowed to meet the benchmark (850). If a retest is required for any student, he/she is expected to remediate using a Faculty Guided remediation plan prior to the second testing date. If the benchmark is not met on the second exam, a “live review” is required to meet program requirements for graduation. All costs of the live review are the student’s responsibility.
