Circulation

The Circulation Desk at each GSCC Library:
Policy Statement

GSCC Libraries will make resources readily and easily accessible to the academic community through an efficient Circulation system.

Library Catalog

The Online Public Access Catalog {OPAC} is used to find materials {books, videos, audiocassettes, etc.} located in the GSCC Library System. Currently 2 separate automation systems are in place. Meadows Library and the McClellan Center Library are integrated into Library Management Network (LMN) with plans to complete the transition of the Ayers Campus Library during the upcoming school year.

If you are looking for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles, please consult the section on Library databases for an explanation of the various databases available both in the Library and through the Library's web page.

The online Catalog and most databases are accessible from your office on campus by connecting to http://www.gadsdenstate.edu/academics/library . The online catalog is accessible at http://www.lmn.lib.al.us

Guidelines or Procedures
  • Faculty and Staff may check out books for a period of one month. However, the Library reserves the right to place a limited circulation period on materials short in supply but much in demand.
  • Members of the faculty, administration, and staff must present a current School ID Badge before checking out materials.
  • A reminder about materials checked out will be sent to faculty, administrators, and staff members when materials become due.
  • Users will be sent requests to return materials checked out to them when others request or need them.
  • Periodicals, reference books, and other materials may be checked out on the day needed and returned to Meadows Library by 3:00 p.m. Evening instructors must return materials by 6:00 p.m. the following evening. These materials may be unavailable for check out at night or during peak usage periods.

Reserve Materials

Policy Statement
Instructional materials, limited in quantity but anticipated to be much in demand by classes should be placed in the Reserve Collection housed at the Circulation Desk.

Procedures
  • The instructor wishing to place materials on reserve must send Reserve Reading Lists to the Circulation Desk at least two days prior to distributing the lists to the students to allow time for processing.
  • Reserve List Forms are available at the Circulation Desk (Meadows--256-549-8333, McClellan--256-238-8342, Ayers--256-835-5435) or the instructor may use the form on the web.
  • Reserve lists should be arranged alphabetically by author and should include the title and call number. The period of reserve time and type of reserve should be indicated. The word "personal" should be written in the space for call number for personal copies of materials the instructor wishes to include on the reserve list.
  • Reserve circulation periods are:
    • Restricted -- Library Use Only
    • Over-Night
    • Seven-Days
  • Materials placed in the Reserve Collection shall be returned to the general collection at the end of the term unless the instructor requests that these materials be taken off reserve sooner. Materials can remain on reserve if the instruction notifies the Circulation Desk before the end of the term {the date grades are due}.

Audiovisual Materials

Policy Statement

A non-print media collection is essential to support the diverse needs of Gadsden State Community College. This collection of media, developed, processed, and maintained through the Media Services Department, is available for circulation.

Procedures

  • Audiovisual materials should be reserved for use as far in advance as possible in order to insure their availability when needed. Since the off-campus centers, or materials from other GSCC libraries, require slightly longer loan periods for materials, these should be scheduled at least 3 days prior to their usage.
  • Materials which are to be used for evening classes must be reserved no later than 4:00 p.m. each day.
  • Materials will be checked out to faculty or staff only.
  • Any damage to materials, i.e., filmstrips, tapes, etc., should be reported to the Circulation Desk when they are returned.
  • Audiovisual materials must be checked out from the Circulation Desk.
  • Students in Court Reporting, Shorthand, or Foreign Language courses should leave and pick up audio tapes for duplication at the Circulation Desk.
