LASER - Learning and Serving Education & Reflection

LASER: Learning and Serving Education & Reflection

History

In 1995 Dr. Victor B. Ficker, GSCC President, recognized the fact that many students "fall through the cracks" in traditional financial aid programs. The rising cost of college tutition is a burden on most of them. His appeal to business and industry leaders in the community resulted in a special scholarship fund for qualified students.

Responsibilities

In exchange for their tutiontion, LASER students volunteer 75 hours of their time each semester at community service agencies. They are truly "giving back" to the community what the community has given to them: an opportunity to pursue their educational goals. LASERs are recognized in the community because they wear their distinctive Student Service Corps T-shirts while whorking for their agencies. With good evaluations and grades, a LASER can receive a scholarship for two semesters as a full-time student.
