Freshman Harris Earns NJCAA All-Region XXII Honors

GADSDEN, Alabama – The Gadsden State women’s basketball team is proud to announce Niala Harris as a First Team All Region XXII selection.

Niala Harris was chosen to the All Region XXII first team after a tremendous freshman season. The Athens, TN native led the team in scoring at 14.6 points a game, 8.9 rebounds a game while shooting 80.6% from the free throw line. Harris stepped up her game during league play where she averaged 16.7 points and 9.6 rebounds. Harris was also named First Team All League for the Northern Division.

“This is not only a nice honor for Niala but for the basketball program,” Gadsden State coach Maurice Bailey said. “Niala had a terrific freshman season here and we’re proud of what she accomplished and looking forward to having her at Gadsden next year”

“Niala is an unselfish player and that’s just one of the things that make her special.”

Harris’ best game of the season came in the against eventual Region XXII champion Shelton State when she tallied a 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including hitting 2-of-2 from 3-point distance, 4-of-4 from the charity stripe and hauling down 14 rebounds. Harris ended the season ranked 2nd in the Region in defensive rebounds (7.3) and free throw shooting (80.6%), 6th in total rebounds (8.9) and 7th in scoring (14.6).

Harris was also quite appreciative of her coach, Maurice Bailey.
“Coach Bailey teaches you the right way to play the game,” Harris said. “He helped me mature as a player and as a person. I appreciate him for that.” “I am looking forward to working hard this summer so that we have a strong season next year”
