Distance Learning Student Handbook

Tips For Success

Distance Learning offers flexibility and convenience, but with it comes special challenges. Below are several tips for success:

  • Establish a Regular Study Schedule
Use the course calendar or keep a calendar with assignment due dates and test dates clearly marked. Then, look at it every day. If possible, have a dedicated study place with all the needed supplies (computer, textbook, paper, pens, calculator, etc.) available. Pace yourself. Remember, this is a learning experience, not a race.

  • Participate!
Whether you are working alone, or in a group, contribute your ideas, perspective and comments on the subject you are studying, and read comments of your classmates. Your instructor is not the only source of information in your course—you can gain great insight from your peers and they can learn from you as well.

  • Log In To Class Every Day.
….or at least 5-6 days per week. It is very easy to fall behind in distance classes and then it becomes difficult to catch up. You can avoid this by logging on everyday.

  • Ask Questions
Because instructor and student are not physically in the same place does not suggest questions can not be asked. If you don't understand something, ASK. Instructors will respond within 24 hours during the business week.

  • Talk About It
Communication is an important element of learning. Talk about what you are studying with friends, mentors, and other students.

It's not about memorizing - it's about learning material that will assist you in your hobbies, career, and life. Memorizing material is not a bad thing, but be sure you are memorizing because you are really interested in the information, and figure out a way to use the memorized information several times within a few days of learning it. The information will stick if it has real-world meaning.
