Gadsden State Presidential Recommendation

Montgomery, Alabama – Bradley R. Byrne, chancellor of Alabama’s two-year college system, will recommend W. Darryl Harrison as the next president of Gadsden State Community College to the Alabama State Board of Education at its Nov.13 board meeting.

Byrne plans to recommend Harrison for the position after completing a presidential search process which brought in 65 applicants from across the country. Valerie Richardson has served as acting president since May, replacing Rene´´e Culverhouse, who served as president at Gadsden State since 2001.

“Dr. Harrison has demonstrated his commitment to community colleges and his understanding of the roles community and technical colleges play in the lives of the people they serve,” Byrne said. “We are looking forward to having someone with his educational experience and background become a part of this system.”

Harrison most recently served as vice president for Academic Affairs at West Georgia Technical College in LaGrange, Georgia. Prior to that, he served in various administrative positions at Northwestern Technical College, including director of Continuing Education and director of Instruction and Distance Education.

Harrison received his doctorate in Education from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He holds a master’s degree in Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and a bachelor’s degree in Religion and Philosophy from Samford University in Birmingham.

Gadsden State Community College serves students in Calhoun, Cleburne, Etowah, and portions of Cherokee and St. Clair counties. Gadsden State is part of the Alabama Community College System, offering technical certificate and degree programs, workforce training, and adult education.
