Design Drafting Students Achieve Certification

Four Gadsden State Community College students enrolled in Drafting and Design Technology at the Ayers campus recently passed their American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) Mechanical Drafting Certification on their first attempt. The ADDA is a professional society aimed at serving the professional growth and advancement of individuals working in the design drafting field.

Program Coordinator Barry Abernathy said, “Elliot Hudgins of Heflin, Don Payne of Gaylesville and Chad Richardson and Eric Shierling, both of Talladega, underwent a preparatory program taught by Beverly Howard, adjunct instructor, last fall prior to the exam.” It is a comprehensive course that extensively covers drafting practices and procedures. The certification is an international program that allows drafters to demonstrate their knowledge in drafting concepts and internationally recognized standards and practices. It also helps employers identify quality employees.

Students from the Drafting Design Technology program at the Ayers Campus are enjoying the newly renovated and expanded facilities. Abernathy said one large room was made into two classrooms with a Computer Aided Design (CAD) lab and a lecture room. New computers and software are also being utilized, making the program more attractive to new students. Currently there are 35 students enrolled in the program. Abernathy expressed proudly that the Gadsden State Maintenance Department was able to do all of the renovation work.
