| GSCC News April is Community College Month Gadsden, Ala -- April is nationally recognized as community college month. Community colleges are an integral part of the education system serving almost half of the undergraduate students in the United States. They prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions, provide workforce development and skills training, and offer noncredit programs ranging from English as a second language to community enrichment programs and cultural activities. Alabama’s 26 public community and technical colleges provided a broad array of educational services for more than 290,000 persons in 2007, meeting diverse and changing local needs and fulfilling vital functions within their service area. More than 458,000 students in Alabama’s community colleges have utilized the Statewide Articulation and Transfer Reporting System to assure the transfer of their academic work toward bachelor’s degrees at four-year institutions since the articulation agreement’s inception in 1998. Gadsden State Community College is celebrating community college month with a variety of activities and events. During the month, Gadsden State Health Sciences Department is sponsoring a food drive to be donated to various community agencies. The Community College Month Committee is sponsoring trivia contests for employees and students. President Renée Culverhouse will be the featured speaker for the Gadsden Rotary Club meeting which will be held on April 3 at the Bevill Center on the Wallace Drive Campus. Dr. Hugh Hammer, aquaculture instructor, and Kay Smith-Foster, public relations coordinator, will speak to the Gadsden Civitans on April 9 and Assistant Dean for Health Sciences Connie Meloun will address the Cherokee County Rotary Club on April 14. WEIS 990 AM in Centre will host Dale Cox, Evelyn Woods, and Frank Miller speaking about automotive manufacturing, nursing and welding respectively. The International Department will have their 30th Annual International Dinner on April 4 and showcase a display of many countries in the Cardinal Breezeway on April 9, 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Student Government Association will have a “Family Feud Game” on April 24. Sodexho-Marriott Food Services at Gadsden State will have a picnic outside the cafeteria on April 25, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The Gadsden State Therapeutic Massage program will engage in two activities this month. The students from Gadsden will offer free chair massages at the Gadsden Mall on April 12, 9:00 a.m. until noon. The Anniston area students from the Ayers Campus will offer free chair massages and paraffin hand dips at the Quintard Mall in Oxford April 29, 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. April 29, 9:30 a.m. until noon, the Valley Street Campus will host a college and career fair for Historically Black Colleges and Universities at the Learning Resource Center.
