MLK Health Fair on Monday

The 10th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Initiative Health Fair is scheduled for Monday, January 21, 8:00 a.m. until noon at the East Broad Campus of Gadsden State Community College. Last year more than 250 persons attended and took advantage of the various services.

The health fair is sponsored by Gadsden State with cooperative support from Gadsden Regional and Riverview Regional Medical Centers. About 30 additional vendors and health agencies will be taking part.

Sharon McGruder, coordinator of the fair, said there will be a number of screenings and tests available without charge to the public. These will include cholesterol screenings, blood pressure/blood sugar checks and oxygen saturation tests. HIV information and testing will be available, as well as information on substance abuse, breast cancer, home health and diabetes. Dr. Jennifer Alverson will be conducting free vision screenings, and the Gadsden Chapter of the NAACP will participate by sponsoring a voter registration drive. Free massages will be provided by Gadsden State students in the Massage Therapy program.

State Farm Insurance agent Rick Hester’s office will have information available regarding the national weight loss initiative, “50 Million Pound Challenge.” A number of local choirs from the Gadsden area will be providing entertainment.
