| GSCC News Gadsden State Community College Names Cardinal Mascot For years Gadsden State has sported a bright red cardinal as the mascot and referred to this fine feathered friend as “the cardinal.” A recommendation was made during a brainstorming session of the public relations department and the marketing committee to give this mascot a permanent name. Rules were established and suggestions were solicited from students, employees, alumni and the community. The committee then chose five names from 150 names that were submitted. The five finalists were placed on the Gadsden State Web site for voting. Over 700 students, employees, alumni and friends of Gadsden State participated in the naming of the cardinal. Swoop is the name that was ceremoniously awarded to the Gadsden State Cardinal during the G Day celebration. G Day is the annual spring festival held on the Wallace Drive Campus of Gadsden State, where students and employees challenge each other in games of softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and other fun activities. The spotlight of the day began with awarding a $100 prize to Ginger Weeks-Deru for submitting the winning name. The Gadsden State Show Band entertained the crowd while Swoop joyously danced with all his new friends. The mascot traditionally participates in athletic events, campus activities and community functions. Swoop will continue to carry out these traditions in addition to making appearances at area schools. “We are pleased to have a name for our mascot and proud that it became a fun event for everyone involved in this endeavor. We look forward to Swoop becoming a visible asset to our Gadsden State family,” remarked Lisa Thacker, assistant to the president for quality assurance. Auditions for the mascot will be held during summer semester at Gadsden State.
