My formal education encompasses the overlapping fields of psychology, literature, rhetoric, argumentive writing, and speech. Less formally I'm a student of the history and development of American culture.
My main focus of instruction, whether it's in writing, speech, literature, or research, is the role communication has in shaping ideology and world view. Our religious, political, and social belief systems are formulated by and expressed through language, and our ability to utilize language verbally or in writing is a skill that helps us validate those beliefs to ourselves and others. In a lot of ways, you are what you read, write, and say, and your value as an employee or citizen is often measured by your ability to do so, so I think it makes sense that we be able to do those things well. We don't want others putting words in our mouths for us. We don't want important ideas left unsaid.
Apart from all that, I do normal human stuff, too. I'm Alabama born and raised. I like taking my dog mountain biking, my daughter hiking, and my beautiful wife out for thai food and beer.
I'm also actively locally and frequently pair with the Gadsden Public Library for projects like Banned Books Week, Cool Guys Read, and the annual GPL Literary Pub Crawl.
