Etowah County Career Fair Feb. 3

Gadsden State will host an Etowah County Career Fair on February 3, from 8:00 a.m. to noon in Beck Field House on the Wallace Drive Campus. Juniors and seniors from area schools are invited, and over 1,000 students are expected to attend.  The event will provide an opportunity for the students to explore various careers of interest.

The students will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from dozens of different careers, including banking, automotive manufacturing, construction, radio, news reporting, nursing, electrical engineering, police work, and many more. Each representative will talk with students one-on-one or in small groups about their profession and answer questions concerning their work.  Some representatives will have displays and handouts which include other instructional materials.

Laura Swann, Gadsden State career coach, said “Our goal is to expose students to as many career opportunities as possible. Many times they see and consider only the popular ‘go-to’ careers and don’t stop to realize that there are numerous high-wage careers in demand that might interest them.”

14th Annual Health Fair

Gadsden State will host the fourteenth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Initiative Health Fair on Monday, January 16. The event will be held in the auditorium of the administration building on the East Broad Campus, from 8 a.m. until noon.

The Health Fair will offer free tests for eyesight, blood pressure, HIV, and oxygen saturation. There will be information available concerning senior health, family success, health awareness, home health, diabetes, and HIV, to name a few.  The American Red Cross Blood Mobile will be present, collecting blood donations.

“The event started when we received a grant for a day of service, and it took on a life of its own. It was so well-received in the community that we kept it going,” said Sharon McGruder, Upward Bound program director at Gadsden State’s Ayers Campus. “Last year over 200 people took advantage of the services offered.”

The Health Fair is done in collaboration with dozens of vendors and health agencies. This year’s special partner is the Lambda Eta Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. These ladies will be the official hostesses, and will facilitate registration and door prizes during the event. The Avenue Nail and Salon will be a new participant this year.  They will be offering services such as mini-massages and other esthetic services that contribute to the whole person wellness aspect.
