Gadsden, Ala.–Many Gadsden State Community College students attending the Valley Street Campus received a teaching aid to help them reach their educational goals. Dawn Bush, instructional technology specialist, said that 100 students have been allowed to borrow laptops. There will be additional laptops available for the fall semester.
Laptops For Students
According to Title III Director Tarva Vaughn, funding for the laptop initiative was made possible through the U.S. Department of Education, College Cost Reduction Access Act Grant (CCRAA) which is a component of the Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Title III Program. The initiative provided for the purchase of laptops and software for students. Most of the laptops have been distributed to students in the various health science and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) courses.
Prior to receiving a laptop, students must sign an agreement concerning the proper care and use of the unit and attend at least one session on basic instruction. Students are required to return the laptops during final examination week. The laptops will be reissued during the first week of the following semester.
Bush explained that technology has quickly become a vital part of the instructional process at Gadsden State. The laptops are an essential learning tool and the students appreciate the convenience of having them. “They are using them in the classroom and at home to help them study. Most students have access to the internet so they are able to enhance their education by accessing the information”.

I would like a laptop because most of my classes can be done on the computer….I had to drop a class this semester because I didn’t have any kind of access to a computer. My teachers send mail through webct everyday….so what r we suppose to do over the weekend about our work on webct?

The laptop program in place through my office is for students taking programs on the Valley Street Campus only. I’m sorry I can’t provide them to all Gadsden State students because I know there is a great need for many students to have one for school.

You can borrow a laptop by going to the (SSS) Student Support Services on the campus. They will aid in the need of borrowing one but you have to return it at the end of the semester.

This fall will be my second semester at GSCC, and after getting an idea of how my classes are set up, I believe that this program would benefit me in my studies tremendously. At this time I am sharing an undependable, old computer with six different members of my family, which makes it difficult at times to do my studies, and am not able to afford a computer of my own. This program is so beneficial to everyone it helps; I just hope that I may become one of those aided by it.
