Gadsden, Ala.–Figures compiled by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) show that Gadsden State Community College’s athletic teams are excelling in academics as compared with other two-year colleges across the nation.
To be considered an academic team by the NJCAA, a grade point average of at least 3.0 is required and six Gadsden State teams achieved that level. The Cardinal teams recognized for the 2008-09 academic year were tennis (3.08 GPA), softball (3.12 GPA), cross country (3.16 GPA), volleyball (3.17 GPA), women’s basketball (3.18 GPA) and cheerleading (3.30 GPA).
Five students were recognized as Distinguished Academic All-Americans with a 3.80 – 4.00 GPA. These included Shana Brooke Wheeler (softball), Nathan Klowskowski (baseball), Audra Oliver (volleyball), Matthew Frasier (baseball), and Jena Bright (women’s basketball).
Johnathan Highfield (tennis) and Kaci Blackstone (cross country) were recognized as Academic All-Americans with a GPA of 3.60 – 3.79.
Gadsden State Athletic Director Mike Cancilla said, “We are extremely proud of these young men and women and the sports they represent. They epitomize the true meaning of student athlete.”
