Let me share a little about myself. I attended Gadsden State and while I was here ran cross country. I transferred to JSU where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social work. I went on to pursue a Masters in Social Work at the University of Alabama. In 2004 I began working at GSCC as the initiative counselor in Student Support Services and in 2013 became director. I love working with students and seeing them succeed. In my “free time” you will find me gardening or playing with my 3 kids.
I started my teaching career in the Gadsden City School System where I taught three years. I started teaching at Gadsden State on the Valley Street campus where I taught Adult Education and then on the East Broad campus. I applied for a job with Student Support Services and moved to Wallace Drive campus to be Tutorial Coordinator for the federal program. I enjoy working with students to meet their career goals and being successful in college. Student Support Services program is a great opportunity and I want to invite you to come and talk to us about what the program offers to help you as a student at GSCC.
Academic Advisor/Transfer Counselor
Hi! My name is Christine Foster Cates. Before coming to GSCC in January, I worked in New Jersey for 10 years at Raritan Valley Community College as an academic advisor. I received my B.A. in Communications from Utica College of Syracuse University, and then because I loved my college experience so much decided, “how can I make this a career” and went on to get my M. Ed. in Student Development Administration from Seattle University. I have worked in various capacities in higher education over the last 20 years - Residential Life, International Services, Disability Services. I have also worked in Ecuador, South America as well as Atlanta, GA. I am so excited to be here at GSCC and look forward to helping you reach your full potential and finding your path. In my free time I love to travel, garden, make creative things, and enjoy time with family and friends. I look forward to meeting you so stop by and say hi when you get a chance.
Math and Computer Lab Coordinator
I have worked as SSS Math and Computer Lab Coordinator since April 2008. I am a Gadsden State graduate who transferred to the University of Alabama, where I obtained a B.S. and a M.A. in mathematics. Outside my hours in SSS, I teach Gadsden State math courses part-time. My hobbies include reading and playing trivia.
My name is Marlene Gaither and I’m the data specialist for Student Support Services. I thoroughly enjoy working in the SSS office and playing a small part in helping students succeed and graduate. I was a stay-at-home mom for many years before enrolling in Gadsden State as a non-traditional student about 16 years ago. My husband and I have two adult children and three grandchildren. Our son has special needs and challenges due to autism, so I have a particular interest in autism awareness and research, as well as sign language as a form of communication. I hope every qualifying student will sign up for SSS and let our staff assist you in making your academic life a resounding success!
