Members of the Gadsden State Community College Cardinal Tennis Team – past and present – will meet on the courts of Gadsden Tennis Complex for the annual Alumni Tennis Tournament. Play begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 29.
“This is a reunion for our former players,” said Buster Stewart, coach of the Gadsden State tennis team. “It’s a time for us to have fun and reconnect, and it gives our current team an opportunity to play matches against former Cardinals.”
Stewart, who has been the coach for 13 years, started the tournament 11 years ago. He expects to have at least 30 players in the tournament with every team from the past 13 years represented by at least one player.
“We have players from my very first Gadsden State team returning,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun to see everyone, and it’s an opportunity for them to again play competitively – even if it’s only for one day!”
Players are divided into two divisions – A for the more competitive players and B for the casual players. “Every player will participate in at least two matches,” Stewart said. “Winning players will participate in more, of course, until we crown the division champions.”
Previous champions returning this year include Hayden Clowers, Clint Johnson, Matt Jolley, Lucas Lampkin, Zain Nawab and Ben Vandergrift.
“When you win, you get a prize and bragging rights for a year,” he said. “The bragging rights are the most important prize of all!”
Tennis fans are invited to watch the matches at the Gadsden Tennis Complex. There is no admission charge.
