Gadsden State holiday, spring convocation closing
Gadsden State Community College will be closed for the holidays Dec. 22-Jan. 3. The College will be closed until 1 p.m. Jan. 4 in order for faculty and staff to participate in the spring semester convocation and local professional development. All offices, services and departments will resume normal operations at 1 p.m. Jan. 4.

The Fall Commencement Ceremony for Gadsden State Community College will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19 at Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center.
Featured speakers will be Gadsden State students Tracey Mulkey, Dorothy Dusendschon and Esther Adewuyi.
U.S. Department of Education grants renewed for Gadsden State programs

Three Gadsden State Community College programs have been informed that grants from the U.S. Department of Education were renewed for another five years. Grants were awarded to the Title III Program on the Valley Street Campus, the Upward Bound Program on the Ayers Campus and the Veterans Upward Bound Program, which is headquartered at the Wallace Drive Campus. All grants are 100 percent funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
Gadsden State A Cappella Choir and Singers to perform Community Christmas Concert

The Gadsden State Community College A Cappella Choir and Singers are performing at the first Community Christmas Concert hosted by the Walnut Gallery. The event will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 8.
“The Gadsden State A Cappella Choir and Gadsden State Singers do so many Christmas programs through the season but most are private events,” said J.T. Harrell, choral director and instructor. “We wanted to have an event that would showcase our groups and their music to the public.”
Gadsden State to host the 17th annual Water Festival

The 17th annual Etowah County Water Festival will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 8 on the Wallace Drive Campus of Gadsden State Community College. An estimated 1,200 fourth-grade teachers and students from Etowah County are expected to attend the innovative event.
Gadsden State faculty and staff win Chancellor’s Awards

Winners of the 2017 Chancellor’s Awards from Gadsden State Community College were recognized during the Alabama Community College Association Conference held Nov. 19-21 in Montgomery.
“The 25 institutions in the Alabama Community College System honor the best of the best with the Chancellor’s Awards,” said Dr. Martha Lavender, president of Gadsden State. “They have been selected for selflessly serving the College and its students while performing their duties at an exceptional level.”
Gadsden State’s Valley Street Campus to host Open House

Gadsden State Community College’s Valley Street Campus is hosting an Open House for its new Student Success Lounge located within the Learning Resource Center. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 11 at the area’s only campus designated as a Historically Black College or University.
