Prerequisite: Regular admission status.

 Course Description:

This course introduces the human body with emphasis on structure, function, and pathology. No laboratory is required.

 Course Goal:

This course is designed to provide the student with a general introduction to the structure and function of the human body. It focuses on important terminology and core concepts pertaining to cells, tissues, and eleven body systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, digestive, urinary, and reproductive. Emphasis is placed upon the unifying theme of homeostasis since a firm foundation of the normal state must be established before emphasis is focused on the diseased state.

 Course Objectives

After completion of this course, the student should:

            1. Be familiar with the anatomical levels of organization involved in the human body.

            2. Be able to identify the major anatomical components of each human body system.

            3. Understand the functional role of each system in maintaining homeostasis and the

mechanisms by which it is achieved.

            4. Be aware of the complementarity of normal structure and function in the human body.

            5. Be aware of common systematic pathological conditions.

Style/Mode of Teaching:

The course material will be presented in a lecture forum. Information will be presented orally and written and will also include hands on experiences in the lab. (Note that a lab is not required, however demonstrations will be conducted.)

 Textbook Requirements:

The Human Body in Health and Disease, 3rd Edition, Thibodeau & Patton, Mosby Year Book, Inc., 2002.

 Methods of Evaluation:

During the course of this semester there will be 4 major tests given; each test counts 100 points. Grades will be compiled using only test scores. Make-up tests will require a doctor’s excuse and must be approved by the instructor. All make-up tests will be taken after the final exam has been given. A short research paper will be assigned, the presentation of the paper counts 30 points and the paper will count 70 points for a total of 100 points. The grades will be calculated dividing the points earned by the points possible. There are 500 points possible for the semester. This is tentative and may change during the semester. All tests will be announced at least 2 class meetings prior to the assigned test date.

As stated in the College Catalog, letter grades are assigned by the following system for all courses for which students have registered:

90-100 = A          80-89 = B          70-79 = C          60-69 = D          50-59 = F

 Make-up Exams:

All make-up work is left to the discretion of the instructor, and only after the Instructor and Division Director/Chair have accepted documented reasons for the missed work. Recommended excused absences include accidents, military service, court appearances, illness of the student or an immediate family member or the death of an immediate family member. Make-up work will be provided for work missed when the student is participating as a representative of the College in a College sponsored activity. Students will in no way be penalized for work missed when the student is participating as a representative for the College. Instructors are not obligated to provide make-up work for pop-quizzes or other in-class daily assignments. A maximum of one make-up exam is allowed. A second missed exam will result in a zero for the assigned exam.

Appeals Process: If a student disagrees with the assignment of an un-excused absence, a tardy or denial of permission to makeup missed work, and appeal may be made to the Dean of Instructional Services or his designee. The appeal must be submitted in writing within one week of the incident.

   Policies:

Grading Procedures: (See Methods of Evaluation.)

Obtaining Grades: In accordance with GSCC policy, grades will not be posted, given out over the phone, or sent by email. A student wishing to know his/her grade before the official grade report is due, must bring a self addressed, stamped envelop to the instructor the last day of class. After grades are posted on the computer, students may obtain their grades by calling 256-549-8290, or 800-746-6472. Students may also obtain their grade by logging onto the GSCC web site at www.gadsdenstate.edu

Attendance: Class attendance is considered an essential part of the educational process at Gadsden State Community College. The College subscribes to the philosophy that academic success derived by students is directly proportional to their class attendance. Students are expected to punctually attend all classes in which they are registered. Recognizing that situations may arise to prevent a student from attending a class, the College will accommodate occasional absences but recommends that students who attend less than 80% of the scheduled class meetings submit a withdrawal request to the Registrar’s Office according to the Withdrawal Procedures described in the College Catalog and Student Handbook. Instructors may advise any student with excessive absences to withdraw from the course involved to protect the academic standing of the student. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor absences and to comply with the instructor’s syllabus concerning make-up work. Failure to complete make-up assignments or to withdraw when it is clear that the student cannot achieve an acceptable grade in the class may result in a low grade, including possibly an “F” based on grade performance in the course. Grades will not be raised or lowered based directly on attendance. Attendance for less than a full class period will be counted as one-half of an absence.

Instructor Absence Policy: If the instructor knows in advance that he will be out, a substitute will be sent if possible. If arrangements for a substitute cannot be made, students are still expected to remain in the classroom for the entire class period and to read the assignments or work problems related to the course material. Contrary to popular collegiate myth, there is no “10 minute rule” whereby students are dismissed if the instructor does not show up within 10 minutes after class is scheduled to start.

Classroom/Lab Safety: Each student must be familiar with the location and usage of fire extinguishers, the location of emergency exits, fire assembly areas, and severe weather shelters.

Class: Special Accommodations: Students requiring special accommodations in order to benefit from this course are encouraged to notify the instructor as soon as possible. Gadsden State is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and will make every reasonable accommodation for students with special learning needs, including hearing impaired and visually impaired students and students with diagnosed learning disabilities, as well as other classifications of disabilities specified in the Act. A student wishing the assistance under the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 should contact the Dean of Student Services (256-549-8270).

Academic Misconduct: The College expects the conduct of each student and organization to be in conformity with standards of common decency and decorum, with recognition of and respect for personal and property rights of others and the educational mission of the College. A detailed discussion of this policy is found in the College Catalog and Student Handbook. Suspected cases of misconduct will be reported to the Dean of Student Services.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY:  Gadsden State Community College is committed to protecting its students, staff, and faculty from sexual harassment, intimidation, and exploitation as prohibited by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and of Title VII (Section 703) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  Any person who believes herself or himself to be subjected to such sexual harassment, intimidation, and/or exploitation should contact Ms. Lisa Thacker, the GSCC Coordinator of Title IX.  Her office is on the 3rd Floor of the Joe Ford Center, Room 342, on the East Broad Campus; her telephone number is 256-549-8241;  her e-mail address is lthacker@gadsdenstate.edu.  Ms.Thacker will provide information about the procedure to be pursued in compliance with the EEOC 1604.11 guidelines.

Cell Phone Use:  Cell phones are prohibited in the classroom. If a lecture/lab is interrupted by a cell phone, that student will be asked to leave the classroom and will be marked absent for that class meeting. If the problem continues, the student will be removed from the class roster. Cell phones are permitted in extreme cases; the instructor will determine each case.

Video Taping and Recordings: Taping the lectures whether on video or audio is left to the discretion of the instructor. A representative of GSCC, or the instructor, may video/audio record at any time.

Emergency Procedures:

Medical Emergency: Call 911, or have your instructor or any other GSCC faculty/staff to make the call.

Fire: Emergency exits are clearly marked in the hallways. Go to the nearest exit and evacuate the building.  GSCC personnel will advise you when it is safe to enter the building.

Tornado and other Weather Emergencies: A continuous horn will sound for 30 seconds. All students, faculty, and staff should proceed to the first floor and seek shelter in an interior hallway away from windows and/or glass doors. On one should attempt to leave the building until a college representative gives notification that the danger has passed.
