BIO 206 TEST 1 STUDY GUIDE

 

 1.         You should be able to define the following terms:

            Anatomy, Physiology, Metabolism, Anabolism, Catabolism, Homeostasis,

            Negative Feedback.

 2.         You should be able to identify the various components associated with the levels

            of organization from atom through organism ( in order).

 3.         You should be able to identify the various body cavities, regions, and membranes

            we discussed. ( Be able to label figure 1.7 also)

 4.         Be able to match the various organ systems to their respective organs and their

            functions.

 5.         Know the various relative positional terms as listed on page 13.

 6.         Be able to describe completely correct “ anatomical position”.

 7.         Be able to visually distinguish the various planes, abdominal quadrants, and

            abdominal regions, as shown on pages 14 and 15.

 8.         Be able to identify all specific body regions on pages 16 and 17 in both a visual

            format as well as by written description.

 9.         Be able to distinguish the four major types of tissues according to their  

            description. ( page 92)

 10.       Be able to match all types of epithelial tissues that we discussed to their respective

            location, function and description. Know what the basement membrane and free

            surface are. Know the difference between endocrine and exocrine glands.

 11.       Be able to match all types of connective tissues that we discussed to their

respective location, function and description. Know the function of the three types  of cells that are commonly found in connective tissues as well as the three types of fibers. Know what the matrix is.

 12.       Be able to match the three types of muscle tissue to their respective location,

            function, and description. Know what striations and intercalated discs are.

 13.       Be able to identify the components of a neuron within nervous tissue. Know what

            dendrites, the cell body, and the axon is. Know what neuroglial cells are.

 14.       Know what the cutaneous membrane is and know the basic differences between

            the epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous layer.

 15.       Know all functions associated with the integument.

 16.       Know the characteristics associated with the outermost ( stratum corneum), and

            the innermost ( stratum basale) layers of the epidermis.

 17.       Know the function of the following integumentary structures and be able to

            identify them visually as seen in figure 6.1 on page 114:

            Hair and hair follicle, Arrector pili muscle, Sebaceous gland, Sweat gland, Light

            Touch and deep pressure receptors, Capillaries, Subcutaneous fat, Dermal papilla,

            Epidermis, Dermis.

 18.       You should know the function of Keratin and Melanin. You should know what

            causes the variations in skin color we talked about including cyanosis, flushing,

            albinism, and tanning. You should know the characteristics of the various skin

            cancers as discussed on page 119.
