WHAT IS THE PLACEMENT TEST?

Appropriate class level placement for English, reading, and math helps to ensure success in a college career.  Gadsden State Community College wants its students to have the tools to help them succeed, and it is for this reason that placement testing is administered.

Each incoming student should take the Compass placement test before talking with an advisor or registering for classes.  However, you must have your application for admission turned in to the Admissions Office before you will be permitted to take the placement test.

The Compass placement test is not designed as a “pass or fail” test; rather, it is administered to determine your placement in math, English and reading.  Because of the importance of the placement test, you should not take the test on a day when you are physically ill, fatigued, or experiencing a high level of emotional stress.

**DETAILED information (automated) regarding the Compass placement test is available any time by calling 256/549-8211.  Sample test questions can be obtained on-line at www.act.org/compass.

what is the placement test re-test policy?

The Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education mandates that each student is permitted to re-test one time only.  Although there is no fee to take the test the first time, a fee of $8 is required when retesting.  The re-test fee should be paid in the Business Office in Allen Hall before coming to the Test Center to re-test.  Please bring the re-test fee receipt with you to the Test Center.
