GADSDEN STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

TESTING SERVICES

Welcome to GSCC Testing Services!  Please refer to the following information regarding all the tests administered by the Test Center at Gadsden State Community College:

WHAT IS THE PLACEMENT TEST?

Appropriate class level placement for English, reading, and math helps to ensure success in a college career.  Gadsden State Community College wants its students to have the tools to help them succeed, and it is for this reason that placement testing is administered.

Each incoming student should take the Compass placement test before talking with an advisor or registering for classes.  However, you must have your application for admission turned in to the Admissions Office before you will be permitted to take the placement test.

The Compass placement test is not designed as a “pass or fail” test; rather, it is administered to determine your placement in math, English and reading.  Because of the importance of the placement test, you should not take the test on a day when you are physically ill, fatigued, or experiencing a high level of emotional stress.

**DETAILED information (automated) regarding the Compass placement test is available any time by calling 256/549-8211.  Sample test questions can be obtained on-line at www.act.org/compass.**

ARE YOU EXEMPT FROM TAKING THE PLACEMENT TEST?

With the appropriate proof, the following students are exempt from all or part of the placement test:

1.         Students scoring 20 or above on the ACT English or math or 480 or above on the SAT verbal or SAT math who enroll in Gadsden State within three years of high school graduation.  (Students must provide scores to the Test Center at Gadsden or Ayers to be cleared to enroll in classes.);

2.                  Students who have an associate degree or higher;

3.                  Students who transfer degree-creditable college-level English or mathematics courses with a grade of C or better;

4.                  Students who have completed required developmental course work at another Alabama College System institution within the last three years;

5.                  Students who can provide documentation of assessment (COMPASS or ASSET) scores that are within the last three years;

6.                  Senior citizens and other non-award seeking majors who are taking continuing education/vocational classes;

7.                  Transient students; and,

8.                  Audit students.

what is the placement test re-test policy?

The Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education mandates that each student is permitted to re-test one time only.  Although there is no fee to take the test the first time, a fee of $8 is required when retesting.  The re-test fee should be paid in the Business Office before coming to the Test Center to re-test.  Please bring the re-test fee receipt with you to the Test Center.

what other tests do you administer and when can i take a test?

Other tests administered by the Gadsden State Community College Wallace Drive Campus Test Center include:

ACT – The ACT assessment is administered nationwide as a college entrance exam.  Gadsden State Community College is a national test site for the ACT assessment, but registration is handled through ACT.  An ACT registration packet can be obtained at your local high school or come by the GSCC Test Center in Inzer Hall.  Registration can also be done online at www.act.org.

CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) – Allows you to receive college credit appropriate to the subject of the CLEP test taken.  For example:  Passing the English Composition CLEP test would eliminate your having to take ENG 101 at Gadsden State.  (Please note that granting CLEP credit varies from college to college.)
