Program Information on Realtime Reporting
General Information

        This program entails a 24-month* curriculum leading to an Associate in Applied Science degree in Realtime Reporting, with students attending year round.  The curriculum, which includes both technical and general education courses, is structured to meet the standards for approval mandated by the Council on Approved Student Education, National Court Reporters Association (NCRA/CASE).
The Realtime Reporting faculty share the principles expressed in the following mission statement, as adopted by the NCRA Board of Directors, with respect to the profession of Realtime Reporting:
"NCRA promotes excellence among those who capture and convert the spoken word to text and is committed to supporting every member in achieving the highest level of professional expertise."
Satisfactory completion of degree requirements prepares the graduate to write the NCRA Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certifying examination.  After passing this examination, the graduate will be certified as a registered professional reporter in Realtime Reporting.  The certificate of certification carries with it the privilege of using the title "Registered Professional Reporter" and of using the abbreviation "RPR."  This certification ensures professional status.
Satisfactory completion of requirements for the Broadcast Captioning Specialization prepares the graduate to write the NCRA Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certifying examination.  After passing this examination, the graduate will be eligible to take the NCRA Certified Broadcast Captioner (CBC) certifying examination.  After passing this examination, the graduate will be certified as a certified broadcast captioner.  The certificate of certification carries with it the privilege of using the title “Certified Broadcast Captioner” and of using the abbreviation “CBC.”  This certification ensures professional status.
Students are admitted into the Realtime Reporting Program only in the Fall Semester.  To receive the Associate in Applied Science degree, a student must earn a grade of "C" or higher in all Realtime Reporting Program courses and others specifically required by NCRA/CASE.  In addition, the student shall pass four (4) five-minute tests with 96 percent accuracy at each of the following speeds:  225 words per minute testimony (two-voice), 200 wpm jury charge, and 180 wpm literary.  The student shall complete at least 50 verified hours of internship, of which a minimum of 40 hours shall be in actual writing time.
The Broadcast Captioning student must write three (3) five-minute, literary broadcast material takes  at 180 wpm (word count) at 96% verbatim accuracy.  The student must submit unedited captioned translations of three (3) 15-minute programs on varied topics for course evaluation taken from the internship experience, and the student shall complete at least 25 verified hours of actual writing and 15 hours of research and dictionary preparation during the internship experience.
Effective July 1, 2006, the law of Alabama states that no person, except as otherwise provided by law, shall practice or attempt to practice court reporting in this state or hold himself or herself out as a court reporter unless the person is a licensed court reporter.
To be licensed as a court reporter, an applicant must pass the Written Knowledge Examination administered by NCRA and must pass an Alabama skills examination or provide documentation of having passed the NCRA Registered Professional Reporter Examination.  For more information on this law, see www.ABCR.alabama.gov
*Although the curriculum is designed to be completed in 24 months, the national average, according to NCRA, is 36 months.

Admission Requirements
To qualify for admission to this program, you must:
1.     Be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language;
2.     Be a citizen of the United States or have declared legal intent to become a citizen;
3.     Notify the Program Director if you have been convicted of a felony (Your application for a Notary Public bond may be denied in light of the nature of the offense for which you were convicted.);
4.     Possess a high school graduation diploma or a GED;
5.     Take the ACT COMPASS placement test (given in the GSCC Testing Center) and achieve a score on it of 62 or higher on the English portion and of 76 or higher on the reading portion  (If your scores are below those specified, you will be required to complete, prior to starting the program, one or more developmental courses in the area or areas of deficiency.)

NOTICE:  Admission to Gadsden State Community College does not guarantee admission to the Realtime Reporting Program.

Application Procedure
1.     Complete the application procedure for admission to GSCC;
2.     Complete and submit the Realtime Reporting application form to the Realtime Reporting Department;
3.     Submit official transcripts of all high school and college work both to the Office of Admissions and to the Realtime Reporting Department; Click Here for Transcript Request Form PDF
4.     Submit a résumé of work experience, activities, and honors to the Realtime Reporting Department, if any;
5.     Complete the ACT COMPASS placement test in the GSCC Testing Center and have the results sent to the Realtime Reporting Department; and
6.     Complete the above requirements no later than the last Friday before July 31.

Selection and Notification
1.     A beginning class is admitted to the Realtime Reporting Program in the Fall Semester only.
2.     All applicants who have completed the Realtime Reporting admission procedure and who have satisfied the admission requirements no later than the last Friday before July 31 will be reviewed by the Realtime Reporting Admissions Committee prior to Fall Semester registration.
3.     Applicants will be ranked for admission on the basis of the date of the receipt of their application, academic transcripts, examination scores, and references.  In light of the availability of equipment and space – or the lack thereof – the number of applicants admitted will be limited, with the selection to be based on the ranking of applicants.
4.     All applicants will be notified, in writing, of their admission status prior to Fall Semester registration.
5.     Applicants who have been notified of their selection for admission to the Realtime Reporting Program must send to the Program Technician a letter of acceptance, by the specified date, indicating their intent to enter the Program or not.
6.     Applicants who do not respond as prescribed above will forfeit their place in the class.  If there are vacancies in a new class, they will be filled by acceptable alternate applicants who have met the admission requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The student entering and participating in the Realtime Reporting program must be able to:

  • Have full use of hands
  • Be able to sit long periods of time
  • Good auditory skills
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time
  • Word knowledge
  • English/grammar skills
  • Good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment
  • Intermediate computer knowledge
  • Good observation techniques
  •  Be able to collect facts and organize data accurately
  •  Be able to manage time wisely
  •  Be able to handle stress
  •  Not addicted to drugs and/or alcohol

Progression and Graduation
1.     In order to progress through and graduate from the Realtime Reporting Program, you must
progress through the required Realtime Reporting curriculum (including both technical and general education courses) in the proper sequence
2.     attain a grade of "C" (70%) or higher in each required Realtime Reporting course at the time prescribed in the curriculum format;
3.     attain a grade of "C" (70%) or higher in each course specifically required by NCRA/CASE (those with an asterisk) no later than the semester specified in the curriculum format;
4.     attain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.00 ("C"); and
5.     abide by the policies, procedures, and course requirements published in each course syllabus and as specified in other materials provided to you.

Curriculum: Realtime Reporting A.A.S.
To earn the Associate in Applied Science degree in Realtime Reporting, a student must complete at least the semester hours of coursework listed below.  The general education courses (those without an asterisk) may be taken prior to, but not later than, the semester specified.  A student may not progress through the program until that student completes each course successfully and in the specified sequence.  Because the general education and other technical courses required by NCRA/CASE complement and build upon the technical courses, a student may not take skills courses only, whether the student is seeking an A.A.S. degree or not.
For the A.A.S. degree in Realtime Reporting, the student must complete a minimum of 76 credit hours – 51 in technical courses and 25 in general education courses – all of which must be approved by the Program Advisor.  Although most of the general education courses are offered on the Wallace Drive Campus, the Realtime Reporting courses are offered only on the East Broad Street Campus.
