May I take massage classes at any Gadsden State campus?
The program is offered on the Valley Street campus only, Prater Hall
How do I apply to the Massage Therapy program?
Can I fax in the application to the Massage program?
Yes. The fax number is 256-549-8676. Remember to include a copy of your Accuplacer test (score has to be 5-8) and to be safe, an unofficial copy of your transcript(s) from your previous school(s) so we can still establish a grade point average if your official documents aren’t on file yet with the college.
What happens if I miss the deadline date to apply?
If your application arrives after the deadline date & we still have seats available in the class, we will certainly consider you as a candidate for admission. If the class is already full we will hold your application over until the next admissions cycle.
What are the prerequisites for Massage Therapy?
This is a short-term certificate program. There are no academic prerequisites; you will be taking only courses related to the practice of massage. Of course, you may take academics along with massage if you like. Just schedule them around your massage classes. And if you’re on financial aid, check with that office first to see how that might impact future aid payments.
If I meet the admissions requirements, will I be automatically accepted into the program?
Not necessarily. You still have to undergo a criminal background check through Verified Credentials. If the results are satisfactory, your acceptance will be complete. NOTE: Do not do the background check until we tell you to. We will not reimburse you if it’s done prior to being granted conditional acceptance & you end up not being admitted.
Why am I required to have a background check? What kind of things are you looking for?
Primarily, we’re making sure that it’s safe for everyone who comes into the program to work on fellow students, instructors, & clients. This is for your protection.
How will I find out whether or not I’m being accepted?
Normally by U.S. mail. The letter is sent to the address on the application so be sure to keep your records updated. If you have applied late & time is an issue, you may be notified through an email or phone call instead.
May I register for massage classes before I’ve been accepted?
No. Only students who have been granted full admission will be cleared to register.
How soon can I start taking massage classes?
New massage classes start each semester: in August, January, & May.
Can I take classes my online?
Some of the classes are done entirely online or as hybrids, meaning you do most of the work online & only come to campus a few times that semester. However, the majority of them do require you to come to class for lecture, lab, & clinical.
Can I take my classes at night or on the weekend?
Unfortunately there is not enough demand for night or weekend classes at this time. If that situation changes we will definitely consider changing to meet that need.
What are essential functions?
Essential functions are the physical & mental requirements necessary for performing the duties of a particular health sciences program, in this case therapeutic massage.
What are clinicals? When do they start & where do they take place?
It will take time to practice & perfect your skills as a massage therapist. When you first begin the program you’ll begin this process in lab, working on your fellow students & instructors. Midway through the 1st semester you’ll begin doing clinic, which you’ll continue the remainder of your time with us. Massage clinics are held during the day in Prater Hall, Valley Street campus & are open to the public. Appointments can be made by calling 256-549-8685.
Will I be able to work while I’m in the program?
Certainly. Many of our students work while in the program, at night & on the weekends.
Can I begin working as a massage therapist as soon as I complete the program?
This process of licensure will be explained in depth as you progress. For now, just know that you must have a license to practice massage therapy in Alabama & many other states.
Am I eligible for financial aid? And will it fully cover my expenses while I’m in the program?
