Mission Statement

Upward Bound Program

Education Today Leads To Success Tomorrow

Times Square, New York 2003

Upward Bound is an intensive college preparatory support project designed to provide low-income, first-generation high school students with encouragement and the essential skills to complete high school and earn a postsecondary degree.  The goal of Upward Bound is to increase postsecondary enrollment and graduation rates of participants.  Upward Bound provides instruction and enrichment activities throughout the calendar year.  Other services provided include study skills development; academic, financial, and personal counseling; tutoring; cultural and social activities; information about postsecondary education opportunities and college visits, assistance with college entrance and financial aid applications; and preparation for college entrance exams.

This program is based on the campus of Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Alabama, and has been in operation since 1973.  In 2004, 79 students attended the Upward Bound Summer Program, 17 of which were Bridge (enrolled to be college students).  In addition, we had 19 students participating in the Work-Study Program.
