Scholarships available for female students enrolled in select programs

Gadsden, Ala. — Over $75,000 in scholarships are up for grabs for female students at Gadsden State Community College who are enrolled in select career technical programs.

Qualified programs include Auto Collision Repair, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Automotive Service Technology, Diesel Technology, Construction Technology, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, Industrial Automation Technology, Mechanical Design Technology, Precision Machining and Welding Technology.

Alan Smith, dean of Workforce Development, said the purpose of these scholarships is to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in Gadsden State’s career technical programs.

“According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, women make up about 47 percent of the country’s workforce but only 30 percent in manufacturing,” he said. “Only 14 percent of the construction industry’s workforce are women. This scholarship program is an initiative to get more women into manufacturing, construction and transportation careers in order to help develop the workforce in our area.”

New and current female students at Gadsden State are eligible for the scholarships that may cover summer and fall semesters. Current students interested in the scholarships should notify their instructor of the qualified program and complete the Federal Vocational Applications.

New students must apply to Gadsden State and be accepted. Once they are accepted, they should contact at Gina Martin in the Workforce Development Division at gmartin@gadsdenstate.edu 256-549-8600. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is May 29.
