Gadsden, Ala. – Gadsden State Community College will continue expanding educational access and opportunity across its service area following the U.S. Department of Education’s release of Fiscal Year 2026 TRIO grant awards.
All three of Gadsden State’s TRIO programs — the Educational Opportunity Center and two Talent Search programs — have received continued federal funding for a new five-year award cycle. Combined, the programs will receive $1,029,700 annually, or more than $5.1 million over five years, to support students and community members as they pursue educational, career and personal goals.
The continued funding supports programs that connect individuals with the resources, guidance and encouragement needed to take the next step toward college, career training and long-term success.
“The success of these programs is measured not only by the funding we receive, but by the lives that are changed because of the opportunities that funding makes possible,” said Dr. Dana Davis, dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Grants and Special Projects at Gadsden State Community College. “These grant-funded programs exemplify Gadsden State's commitment to being a college for our community by expanding access to education through meaningful outreach, student-centered support services, and strategic partnerships that empower individuals, strengthen families, and create pathways to academic, career, and lifelong success throughout our region.”
Gadsden State’s Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) has been awarded $256,200 annually for the next five years. The EOC serves approximately 915 adults each year, providing free educational and career support services throughout the communities Gadsden State serves. Participants receive assistance with opportunities such as earning a GED, exploring skilled trades, enrolling in college and navigating career pathways. By helping adults identify their goals and connecting with the appropriate educational and workforce resources, the EOC provides a bridge to new opportunities for individuals and families throughout the region.
Gadsden State’s two Talent Search programs also received continued funding for another five-year cycle. The Talent Search Ayers program will receive $368,500 annually and serves approximately 737 students each year, while the Talent Search Gadsden program will receive $405,000 annually and serves approximately 810 students each year. Together, the programs provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds with academic, career and financial counseling, along with encouragement and support as they work toward completing high school and pursuing postsecondary education.
The programs help students understand their options, prepare for college and careers, and develop the knowledge and confidence needed to pursue their long-term educational goals.
“Gadsden State is committed to being more than a place where people earn a credential,” said Alan Smith, president of Gadsden State Community College. “We want to be a college that helps people see what is possible and gives them the support to get there. I am especially proud of Dr. Davis and our TRIO team for the dedication they bring to this work every day. These programs meet people where they are, help remove barriers to education and create opportunities that can change the trajectory of a student, a family and an entire community.”
The continued TRIO funding aligns with Gadsden State’s mission of preparing students from all backgrounds for success through education and workforce development, with a focus on community engagement and positive economic impact.
“These awards represent a significant investment in the people and communities we serve,” Davis said. “The continued support allows our TRIO professionals to build on the relationships and services that help students and community members move from aspiration to achievement.”
With more than $1 million in annual federal funding, Gadsden State’s TRIO programs will continue providing educational guidance, academic support, career exploration and access to postsecondary opportunities for thousands of individuals throughout the next five years.
For Gadsden State, the funding represents more than an investment in programs; it represents an investment in people, possibilities and the future of the communities the College serves.
