Gadsden State Recognizes Nursing Apprenticeship Signings with Local Healthcare Employers

Gadsden, Ala. – Six Gadsden State Community College nursing students have been hired by three area health care facilities through the Registered Nursing Apprenticeship Program. The students formally signed employment contracts during a signing ceremony Aug. 20 at the Beck Conference Center on Gadsden State’s Wallace Drive Campus.

“These students have worked hard to prepare for careers in nursing, and we are proud to see their dedication rewarded with employment opportunities in our community,” said Dr. Joey Battles, dean of Health Sciences at Gadsden State. “Their success is a reflection of the quality of education and hands-on training provided through Gadsden State’s nursing programs, as well as the strong partnerships we have with area health care providers.”

During the apprenticeship, students will have the opportunity to strengthen and expand their clinical skills while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the healthcare field. The program allows nursing students to attend classes and labs while working two to three days each week with a registered employer. As apprentices complete required training milestones, they earn a progressive wage that reflects their advancing knowledge and skill development.

Apprentices may continue their employment following the completion of the apprenticeship and passing the National Council Licensure Examination that certifies nurses.

The students were hired by Marshall Medical Centers, Gadsden Regional Medical Center and Riverview Regional Medical Center.

Kylee Gilbert — Marshall Medical Centers
Alyssa Baker — Gadsden Regional Medical Center
Nicole Wren — Gadsden Regional Medical Center
Madilyn Layfield — Riverview Regional Medical Center

“Registered apprenticeships provide a meaningful bridge between education and employment,” said Hannah Tucker, case manager for the Health Sciences Division. “Students have the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom in real-world health care settings, gaining hands-on experience, professional guidance and confidence as they prepare for careers in nursing. For employers, the program provides an opportunity to develop and invest in future nurses while building a stronger workforce to meet the growing needs of the communities they serve.”

The hiring of these six students also reflects the important role Gadsden State plays in preparing a skilled health care workforce for the communities it serves.

“We congratulate Trinitee, Brittany, Kylee, Alyssa, Nicole and Madilyn on this accomplishment and wish them continued success as they begin their nursing careers,” Tucker said.
