Gadsden, Ala. — Two Gadsden State Community College students have been awarded $2,000 scholarships through the Building Futures: Enhancing Lives with Scholarships initiative, which supports students pursuing education and training for high-demand careers.

Johnathan Moody, a Construction Technology student, and Evan Teel, an Industrial Automation student participating in East Alabama FAME, were recognized during a recent presentation at Gadsden State. They were joined by Gadsden State President Alan Smith, Alabama Sen. Andrew Jones and representatives from the Coosa Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council.

The Building Futures initiative is a partnership involving the Alabama Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils and the Alabama Community College System. The initiative is providing 50 scholarships to students across Alabama who are enrolled in short-term certificate, non-credit or associate degree programs leading to high-demand occupations in the aviation and construction industries.

Eligible fields include aviation mechanics, avionics, construction management, welding and pipefitting, HVAC/R, carpentry, electrical technology and plumbing. Scholarship recipients may use the $2,000 award during the Fall 2026, Spring 2027 or Summer 2027 semester.

Moody is pursuing Construction Technology at Gadsden State, where students receive hands-on training designed to prepare them for careers in the construction industry.

Teel is studying Industrial Automation through East Alabama FAME, an advanced manufacturing work-based learning program that combines classroom instruction with paid, hands-on experience in industry.

The scholarships recognize the students' dedication to their programs while helping reduce the financial barriers associated with completing their education and entering the workforce.

Gadsden State offers a variety of career and technical education, and workforce programs designed to prepare students for high-demand, high-wage careers and meet the workforce needs of businesses and industries throughout northeast Alabama.
