Medical Laboratory Technology
Medical laboratory technicians/technologists perform laboratory tests that play a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. MLTs perform a variety of analyses on blood and other specimens. They look for bacteria and other microorganisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; count cells and look for abnormal cells in blood and bodily fluids; crossmatch blood for transfusions; and test for drug levels in the blood that indicates response to treatment.
An MLT’s role is to provide timely, accurate laboratory results in medical labs at hospitals, doctor’s offices and reference labs.
Gadsden State’s five-semester program involves comprehensive coursework, on-campus laboratory training and clinical education. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded an Associate in Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology.
National surveys indicate a need for qualified MLT’s throughout the country. Over the past three years, 100 percent of the graduates from Gadsden State’s MLT program earned positions in local medical facilities.
Background checks will be required upon admission into the program.
A new class will be admitted to the Medical Laboratory Technology program for the Summer 2024 semester if there is a minimum of 10 qualified applicants. If this does not happen, the summer applicants will be added to the Fall 2024 selection pool. A new class will be admitted to the Medical Laboratory Technology program for the Fall 2024 semester. Student selection is based on completion of all requirements: Transcripts, admission score and availability of space at the clinical facilities. Prospective students may review the MLT Ranking Scale below.
