Cardinals cross country team to host fundraiser

Centre, Ala. — The Gadsden State Community College cross country team is hosting an inaugural 1-mile and 5K run at 8:30 a.m. May 13.  Monies collected from the fundraiser will be used to provide team equipment and travel for the 2023 season.

“We want to provide the best competitive experience for our athletes,” said Roseanne Green, head coach of Gadsden State’s cross country team. “This event allows us to bring the community together to have fun while supporting our student-athletes with team equipment and a traveling budget.”

The overall goal of the race is to give participants a taste of a cross-country racing. The race includes grass, which is similar to the races held at many of the high school and college cross-country courses.

“This competitive race course will be fast and give participants the opportunity to set new personal running records,” Green said.

Both runs will begin and end at Gadsden State Cherokee located at 801 Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.  Awards will be given to the Top 3 overall male and female participants in each age group. The awards ceremony will begin immediately after the results are in and winners must be present to receive their awards. Medals will not be mailed.

Runners and walkers of all ages and levels are welcome. The registration fee for the Cardinal Cross Country 1-mile is $20 and 5K is $30. The run signup fee is $2.50.  Registration includes an electronic chipped timing bib.

Preregistration is required and race day packet pick-up is available from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. for both the 1-mile run and the 5K races in the Gadsden State Cherokee parking lot. The 1-mile and 5K races start promptly at 8:30 a.m.

The runs will be on closed courses on Gadsden State Cherokee and adjacent City of Centre Softball Complex.

“It will be interesting to see seasoned runners compete against our cross-country athletes,” Green said.

The Cardinals Cross Country Run is sponsored by Alabama Teachers Credit Union, Quality of Life Cherokee, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, McClellan Chiropractic and Coosa Industrial Supply, Inc. Additional support is provided by the City of Centre; Stacey Jones, parks and recreation director; and Shawn Rogers, director of the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency.
