Police and Public Safety Department to host free women’s self-defense class
Gadsden, Ala. — Gadsden State Community College’s Police and Public Safety Department is hosting a free women’s self-defense class from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11 in the Beck Conference Center on the Wallace Drive Campus.
“We are thrilled to host this inaugural event dedicated to enhancing personal safety,” said Chief Jay Freeman. “Self-defense is always important but especially during the upcoming holiday season. Women, like everyone else, should prioritize their safety as the holiday season is often a time when crime rates increase. The self-defense class is a golden opportunity to broaden your knowledge and skills alongside your family, co-workers and friends.”
The women’s self-defense class is held in collaboration with the Gadsden Police Department and the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office.
“We have designed a comprehensive program delivered by a panel of seasoned speakers and instructors,” he said. “They are ready to equip participants with crucial knowledge and skills to help maintain their safety.”
The class is designed for women ages 13 and up. It will include a Stop the Bleed Session, which involves the hands-on practice of applying direct pressure, packing a wound and using a tourniquet to stop bleeding. Other topics to be covered include situational awareness, legal insights and hands-on self-defense training.
“This class will empower women with confidence and valuable self-defense skills,” Freeman said. “It’s more than a training session. It’s an invitation to be part of a community that values safety and empowerment.”
An optional session is offered to those ages 18 and up from 12:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gadsden Police Department Shooting Range. There, participants will learn about firearm safety and awareness, and they will have the opportunity to shoot at the range. Participants must have their own functioning handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition.
“I hope we have a lot of participants for this free event,” Freeman said. “I want them to understand the physical techniques of self-defense but to also understand that being proactive, aware and prepared are so important. Being cautious and taking steps to stay safe can significantly reduce the risk of encountering dangerous situations.”
