Gadsden State crowns homecoming king and queen
Gadsden, Ala. — Gadsden State Community College crowned a new Homecoming King and Queen during the recent Homecoming basketball games at Beck Gymnasium. Dalton Chestnut was crowned homecoming king, and Isis Young was crowned homecoming queen.
“I was so excited,” said Young. “I have always wanted this.”
Young attends the Ayers Campus in Anniston and is earning her Salon and Spa Management associate degree in hopes of opening her own salon one day.
“I just don’t see myself doing anything else,” she said. “I have such a passion for doing hair. I just love it.”
When Young found out she was nominated for homecoming queen, she went from class-to-class campaigning for the coveted title.
“I might have bribed a few people saying I would do their hair if they voted for me,” said Young.
After Young graduates, she plans to be a travel hairstylist.
“I really want to move to New York and do hair for movie stars and actors,” she said.
Young has big dreams and hopes to give back to her grandparents, who have supported her the entire way.
“They have invested in me a lot while I’ve been at Gadsden State,” said Young. “I hope I can give back to them one day and show how much I truly appreciate them.”
A second-year student at Gadsden State, Young is also active in Student Support Services, a federally-funded program that serves students who are first-generation, low-income and/or disabled by ensuring they receive opportunities to succeed.
“Everyone at Gadsden State is so caring and considerate,” she said. “I have a big support system, and I hope to be a big help with being queen. I’m proud to represent Gadsden State.”
Dalton Chestnut attends Gadsden State Cherokee in Centre and is working on his general studies degree.
“I was surprised when I won homecoming king,” he said. “There were a lot of great candidates.”
Chestnut’s instructor notified him that he had been nominated and needed to start campaigning.
“I just went around the community telling my friends to vote for me,” he said. “I also asked teachers to spread the word in their classes. I let everyone know why I’d be a good candidate.”
Since winning homecoming king, a lot of people have congratulated him on his achievement.
“Some people have even come up to me and bowed,” he said.
After Chestnut receives his general studies degree next year, he plans to transfer to a four-year university where he will pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
“After I receive my degree, my dream job is to work at Alabama Power,” he said.
Chestnut is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and hopes to work with the Cardinal Tutoring Center next semester at Gadsden State.
“Everyone is so nice and helpful at the College,” he said. “I hope I can be just as helpful and do a good job representing Gadsden State as homecoming king.”
Students on the Homecoming Court with Chestnut and Young include Kaylee Green of Cherokee County, Artavious McCloud of Gadsden, Sebella Henry of Gadsden and Brody Wood of Clay County.
