Educational Briefs for Community

Gadsden State Cherokee holds food drive

Centre, Ala. — Gadsden State Cherokee is hosting a food drive for the Cherokee County Children’s Advocacy Center, a child-focused facility designed to be a comfortable and safe place for children who have been victimized through abuse or neglect.

Individually packaged snacks and drinks as well as $5 fast food cards will be accepted. The public can drop off donations to the academic building through April 30.


Free public events planned for Poetry Month

Gadsden, Ala. — The Cardinal Arts Journal at Gadsden State is hosting free events in observance of National Poetry Month. In addition to several events for students, the CAJ team has planned three events that are free and open to the public.

The first event – Plants and Poetry with Hooten Holler – is held in collaboration with the Windy Van Hooten Teaching Garden located at 173 Hillview Road in Gadsden. Participants will read poems about plants, learn to identify various medicinal plants and try their hand at composing poetry about their favorite plants. The workshop is at 4 p.m. April 12.

The public is also invited to the annual Cardinal Arts Journal Reading and Exhibit at 4 p.m. April 24. Come see an exhibit of works compiled from submissions to the CAJ. Writers will also read their poems, essays and short stories at the free event at the Center for Cultural Arts.

Women in Poetry will be at 4 p.m. April 29 at the Center for Cultural Arts. Learn more about the history of women and poetry through watching videos and hearing recordings of famous women reading their poetry. There will also be group discussions about women in poetry.

Honors Days planned in Gadsden, Anniston

Anniston, Ala. — Gadsden State’s Honors Committee and Academics Division is hosting the annual Honors Days in Anniston and Gadsden. The purpose of the events is to recognize outstanding academic achievement of our students. Scholarships to four-year universities are also awarded.

The event for students who primarily attend classes on the Ayers Campus will be at 2 p.m. April 16 in the Learning Resource Center. The Honors Day for students attending Gadsden campuses or Gadsden State Cherokee will be at 2 p.m. April 17 in Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center.


Students to be inducted into honor society

Gadsden, Ala. – New members of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will be inducted during a ceremony at 5 p.m. April 17 in the Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center. PTK recognizes the academic achievements of community college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders.


Women’s self-defense courses offered

Centre, Ala. – The Gadsden State Police and Public Safety Department and other local law enforcement agencies are offering a class that will empower women with confidence and valuable self-defense skills. The course is being offered in Gadsden and Centre.

The course includes topics such as situational awareness, legal insights, hands-on self-defense training and more.

The Gadsden area course is from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. April 20. The half-day course will be held in the Beck Conference Center on the Wallace Drive Campus. An optional session to go to the local shooting range is also available to those who have a functioning handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition.

The course in Centre will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 22 in the Community Room located in the Richard Lindsey Arena. There will be no optional shooting range session.
