Gadsden State Simulation Brings Interprofessional Training to Life
Gadsden, Ala. — Gadsden State Community College’s Health Sciences Division hosted a large-scale mass casualty incident simulation on April 17 at the Wallace Drive Campus, delivering an immersive, interprofessional training experience for students across multiple disciplines.
The exercise centered on a simulated bus crash involving multiple injuries, requiring first responders and students to quickly assess the scene, prioritize treatment and coordinate care in real time. The scenario challenged participants to apply classroom knowledge in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment that mirrors real-world emergencies.
Students and faculty from Nursing, EMS, Medical Lab Technology, Dental Assisting, Radiologic Technology, Sonography, Surgical Technology and Medical Assisting collaborated throughout the simulation, reinforcing the importance of communication, teamwork and clearly defined roles in patient care.
“I think we all learned together how to take care of our patients and make sure they’re stable. I got to work in the ER and better understand the patient flow.” said Kyndal Alvarez, a second-year Gadsden State nursing student, “I learned how chaotic it can get but everyone reacted very well. It was an awesome experience and I’m glad I got to be part of it.”
Local emergency response agencies partnered in the event, enhancing the realism of the exercise and strengthening collaboration between future healthcare professionals and active first responders. A highlight of the event was a LifeFlight helicopter landing on
campus providing an additional layer of real-world exposure to emergency transport operations.
“This experience allows our students to move beyond theory and step into the realities of emergency response,” said Joey Battles, dean of Health Sciences. “Working in an interprofessional environment alongside our community partners prepares them to think critically, communicate effectively and respond with confidence when it matters most.”
The simulation also served as an opportunity to strengthen coordination among participating agencies and identify opportunities for continued partnership in training and response efforts.
Gadsden State continues to prioritize hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for high-demand healthcare careers while supporting the needs of the region.
