Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Bryan Barrientos

September is National Hispanic Heritage Month! Gadsden State Community College’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee has provided interesting facts and wonderful spotlights featuring the beautiful Hispanic culture.

This is the final National Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight. It features Bryan Barrientos, a nursing student at Gadsden State Cherokee. He recently passed the LPN exam and will graduate in December with a degree in Registered Nursing.

What is your background and ancestry?

My mother was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. My father was born in Tlaxcala, Mexico. I was born in Fort Payne.

What are ways you honor your Hispanic culture daily?

I try to pass along my Hispanic heritage by teaching others how to speak Spanish. I also teach them how to prepare special Hispanic dishes.

Is there a specific part of Hispanic culture that you want to pass along to others?

There’s so many traditions I’d like to pass along to others, but, most importantly, I’d like to pass on my Catholic beliefs, food and family values.

Describe your experience as a Hispanic student and then instructor in higher education?

It has been a pleasant experience for me at Gadsden State. Everyone is very friendly, and the teachers are very helpful.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity for me to show my background and teach other people about the different traditions from the Hispanic culture.
