Gadsden State to celebrate International Education Week 

Gadsden, Ala.— The Division of Languages and Humanities, the Alabama Language Institute and the Students Without Borders Club at Gadsden State Community College will celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide during International Education Week Nov. 13-17.  All events will take place at the Cardinal Café on the Wallace Drive Campus.  

All students, faculty, staff and community are invited to join in the observance. Events are free and open to the public. 

“This year’s theme, ‘International Education Is the Future,’ explores the many ways that international education is driving us into the future,” said Elise Harbin, director of Cardinal Tutoring Centers. “The week builds support for cultural exchanges around the world. IEW events are hosted to encourage all individuals interested in international exchange to learn more about the opportunities available. IEW brings recognition to our international students at Gadsden State as well as showcases the value of internationalization.”  

Activities for the week include two presentations and a language table luncheon with refreshments.

The celebration will begin Nov. 13 with “From Intensive English Program to PhD” presented by Dr. Khalid Said, math instructor at Gadsden State. It will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.  A second presentation, “A Student’s Perspective on Russia and Latvia,” will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. It will be presented by Andris Terauds, an Alabama Language Institute student.

The finale event will feature Global Cardinals from various countries sharing their cultures and languages. The event will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Cardinal Café.  Everyone is invited to visit language tables to learn common phrases in various languages including Arabic, Chichewa (Nyanja), Chinese, Ewe, Fang, French, Haitian-Kreyol, Malagache, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Urdu. Light refreshments will be served. 

For the fall semester, Gadsden State has 41 students from 23 countries and more than 17 language groups represented on campus.
